Laminate Flooring, Explained Honestly and Installed Properly

Laminate is the most misjudged floor in the showroom: buyers remember 2005's hollow, shiny planks and miss what the category has become, deep-textured, water-resistant surfaces with the hardest wear layer of any wood-look product, at $3–$10 per square foot installed. For bedrooms, halls, bonus rooms and budget-conscious whole floors across the Memphis east metro, it's frequently the smartest spend on the sheet.

We stock wood-look and stone-look lines from AC3 household grade to AC5 heavy-traffic rated, and we'll tell you plainly where laminate wins, and where a kitchen or bath should take luxury vinyl or tile instead.

Typical installed cost: $3$10 per sq ft installed · Memphis-metro planning range; national installed laminate runs $3–$13 per sq ft (Angi 2026)

Moisture-tested installs

Slab moisture is checked before wood or vinyl goes down, the step that prevents most Memphis-area floor failures.

AC ratings, decoded in one paragraph

The AC number is laminate's honesty label: AC3 handles normal residential traffic, AC4 heavy residential and light commercial, AC5 the busiest floors in the house. The rating tests abrasion, impact and stain resistance, it's why a $4-per-foot AC4 plank often outlives a prettier product with no rating at all. Thickness (8–12 mm) adds solidity underfoot and sound damping but is not a substitute for the AC rating. Our default recommendation for family homes is 10–12 mm AC4.

Water resistance: what the new cores really tolerate

Modern water-resistant laminates survive surface spills for 24–72 hours by manufacturer rating, a category-changing improvement that covers real bedroom, hallway and living-room life completely. What no fiberboard core tolerates is standing water reaching an unsealed edge or flooding from below, which is why we still route full baths and flood-prone laundries to vinyl or tile, and why slab installations here always get a vapor-barrier underlayment after a moisture check.

That's the honest boundary. Inside it, today's laminate is a durable, beautiful floor; outside it, no marketing survives contact with a burst supply line.

Where laminate beats LVP, and where it doesn't

Laminate wins on scratch resistance (its aluminum-oxide surface is harder than any vinyl wear layer), on realism at a given price (deeper embossing, more convincing texture), and on cost, typically $1–$3 per square foot under comparable LVP. LVP wins on total water immunity and thinner height buildup. Our practical split across the metro: laminate upstairs and in living spaces, LVP in kitchens and wet rooms, often both in one project with invisible doorway transitions.

Laminate questions, answered

What does laminate cost installed in the Memphis area?

$3–$10 per square foot installed, Angi's 2026 national data reads $3–$13 and we sit inside it. A typical three-bedroom-and-hall project of 700–900 square feet runs $2,400–$6,500 including tear-out, underlayment and trim.

Is laminate bad for resale value?

Not at today's quality tiers. A 12 mm AC4 plank with realistic texture reads as a hard-surface upgrade over carpet in every listing, and buyers in this market respond to continuous hard flooring. Where value suffers is covering sound hardwood with laminate, we check what's underneath first.

How does laminate handle Memphis humidity?

Well, with two disciplines: 48 hours of on-site acclimation before installation, and proper expansion gaps at the perimeter (hidden under trim). The floating floor rides seasonal swings as one surface. Slab installations add a vapor-barrier underlayment after a moisture check, standard scope in our quotes.

Can I put laminate in my kitchen?

Water-resistant AC4/AC5 lines are rated for it and many households run them happily. Our honest guidance: if the kitchen is your project's only wet-adjacent room and you love a specific laminate, yes with sealed thresholds; if you're flooring kitchen plus laundry plus baths, LVP removes the asterisk for similar money.
