Luxury Vinyl Flooring: The Metro's Default Floor, Done Right

Luxury vinyl has become the most-installed floor in the Memphis east metro for a straightforward reason: it's the only product that gives slab-built, open-plan houses a continuous waterproof wood look at a family-friendly price, $4–$10 per square foot installed here, tracking national published data. We supply wood-look LVP, stone-look and ceramic-look LVT, and rigid-core lines engineered for this region's long sightlines.

The catch nobody's marketing mentions: LVP's failures are almost never the product. They're the substrate. Click joints fail over unflattened slabs, and adhesives fail over untested vapor. Our installs price the prep honestly because the prep is what you're actually buying.

Typical installed cost: $4$10 per sq ft installed · Memphis-metro planning range; typical national LVP installs run $5–$12 per sq ft (Fixr 2025), $3–$10 per HomeAdvisor 2025

Moisture-tested installs

Slab moisture is checked before wood or vinyl goes down, the step that prevents most Memphis-area floor failures.

Luxury vinyl formats we install

Wear layer and core: the two numbers that matter

Wear layer (measured in mils) is lifespan: 12 mil handles normal residential life, 20 mil shrugs off big dogs and rental turnover, 22+ mil is commercial spec. Below 12 mil is where regret lives. Core type is feel and behavior: SPC (stone-polymer) is dense, dent-resistant and bridges minor substrate flaws, our default recommendation; WPC (wood-polymer) is thicker, warmer and quieter but softer under point loads.

Looks have converged, every major line now offers convincing oak, hickory, stone and ceramic visuals with embossed-in-register texture. Spend your budget on mils and core, not on the photograph.

Floating or glue-down: matched to the room, not the habit

Floating click-lock installs are faster, more forgiving and right for most residential rooms. Glue-down earns its extra labor in large hard-use zones, laundries, mudrooms, commercial-adjacent spaces, where it eliminates the hollow footfall of floating floors and can't shift under rolling loads. On this region's slabs, glue-down adds a hard prerequisite: quantitative moisture testing, because adhesive cares about vapor even when the plank doesn't.

Long open-plan runs get engineering attention either way: manufacturer maximum-run specs, perimeter expansion gaps, and planned breaks at doorways when a sightline genuinely exceeds spec.

Where LVP is the wrong answer

We sell against ourselves in three situations. Sound original hardwood under old carpet: refinish it, don't cover it. Formal spaces in upper-price-band homes where buyers expect wood: engineered hardwood carries the appraisal weight. Severely out-of-flat slabs where leveling costs would rival a better floor: sometimes tile with a membrane, or slab correction first, is the honest path. A quote from us includes that conversation when it applies.

Luxury vinyl questions, answered

What does LVP cost installed in the Memphis area?

$4–$10 per square foot installed. National sources bracket the same figures, Fixr 2025 puts typical installs at $5–$12, HomeAdvisor at $3–$10 with an average 560-square-foot project near $3,360. Tear-out and slab flattening are the honest extras, always itemized.

Is LVP actually waterproof?

The plank is, SPC and WPC cores don't swell regardless of surface water. The floor system is only as waterproof as its edges and the structure below, so floods still need cleanup and slabs still get moisture-checked before glue-down. For spills, pets and daily life: yes, genuinely waterproof.

How thick should my LVP be?

Judge by wear layer and core, not total thickness. A 5 mm SPC plank with a 20 mil wear layer outperforms an 8 mm plank wearing 6 mils. For family homes we spec 12–20 mil wear layers on rigid cores; thickness then follows from the line you choose.

Can LVP be repaired if a plank is damaged?

Yes, individually, which is a quiet advantage over sheet goods and site-finished wood. Floating planks unclick back to the damaged board; glue-down planks cut out and replace. We recommend keeping a box of attic stock from every install, and we note your product line on the quote for future matching.
