Porcelain vs ceramic: pay for density where it earns
Porcelain is ceramic's denser sibling, fired harder, nearly non-absorbent, tougher against abrasion, and it's the right body for kitchens, mudrooms, high-traffic floors and anywhere freeze or soak is conceivable. Standard ceramic saves $2–$4 per square foot installed and serves beautifully in secondary baths and laundries. The PEI abrasion rating on the box is the tiebreaker: PEI 3+ for residential floors, PEI 4+ where life is hard on surfaces.
Wood-look plank tile deserves its popularity here, wood's warmth with porcelain's invincibility, with one installer's caveat we always honor: long planks crown slightly by manufacture, so they lay flat only in offsets of a third or less, never a running 50% brick bond.
The substrate is the project
A tile floor is a system: substrate, membrane, mortar, tile, grout, and the visible layer is the least likely to fail. Our installs sound the slab for hollows, map cracks, and check flatness against the tighter tolerance large-format tile demands, leveling before setting where the straightedge says so. Over crack-prone or patched concrete, an uncoupling membrane isolates the tile from the slab's future movement, a $2–$4 per square foot line that is the cheapest insurance in flooring.
Wet-area floors add waterproofing membranes; heated floors slot electric radiant mats into the same stack. All of it appears as named lines on the quote, because a tile bid without substrate lines is a bid planning to discover them later.

Is grout going to be a maintenance headache?
